Salcutan, Barna and Sartori Make Their Olympic Debut

The Cardinals take world stage
TOKYO -- The University of Louisville swimming team had three Cardinals competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Sunday morning.

First in the water for the Cardinals and swimming in the first heat of the day was Tatiana Salcutan, who won her heat with a time of 1:01.59 swimming the 100M Backstroke for Moldova. The prelims brought fireworks early, as three swimmers set the Olympic Record in three consecutive heats. Australian Kaylee McKeown (57.88) will be the top seed in the semi-finals with American Regan Smith and Kylie Masse of Canada rounding out the top three.Â
Incoming freshman Cardinal Murilo Sartori competed in the 200M Freestyle posting a time of 1:47.11 swimming for his native Brazil. The top seed in the finals will be Hwang Sunwoo of South Korea, who set a World Junior Record with a time of 1:44.62.
Cardinal sprint specialist Andrej Barna split 47.50 in the 4x100M Freestyle swimming for Serbia. The Serbs went 3:13.71 put up by Velimir Stjepanovic (48.74), Barna (47.50), Uros Nikolic (48.94) and Nikola Acin (48.53) . Italy put up the best time 3:10.29, more than a second ahead of the field, and will be the top seed in the finals.
