Cardinals Send Five to Finals in First Day of Racing at US Olympic Trials

Day 1 is in the books for Wave I
OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Louisville swimming team sent five Cardinals to the finals of the US Olympic Trials in the first day of racing at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

In the first race for the Cardinals, sprint specialist Christiana Regenauer stopped the clock in 56.29 in the A-final. The event was won by 16-year-old Camille Spink's 55.25.

On the men's side, Kyle Worrell put up a 51.09 in the B-finals of the 100M Freestyle, touching 7th in his heat. Â In the A-final, Michael Eastman touched third in 50.14 in the 100M Freestyle, just .20 of a second from the win. The top two in the A-final advance to the Wave II competition. The event was won by Patrick Sammon, who posted the only sub-50 time of 49.94. Â

Louisville's Gabe Orbe boarded a 2:03.47 in the Finals of the 200 Fly to touch seventh in the B-Final. The event was won by Carl Bloebaum's 1:58.90, whose time moves him up to the No.18-ranked American.

In the 100M Backstroke, Greyson Alarcon posted a time 56.49 in the B-Final to tie for sixth place. Indiana's Jacob Steele won the event with a time of 1:58.90 to advance to the Wave II meet.

Tanner Cummings raced this morning, posting a 50.95 in the 100M and was the alternate for tonight's finals.

The current Olympic Trials qualifying standards will allow athletes into the four-day Wave I meet, while a new, tougher standard will allow athletes into the Wave II meet. The top two finishers in each event at Wave I will be able to compete in the Wave II meet the following week, with the Olympic team selected from the Wave II results. USA Swimming is expecting around 19 more qualifiers per event.
