Cardinals Send Two to US Olympic Trial Finals After Day 3
June 15, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
The Cards had four Top 16 finishes and three swam in the semifinals tonight
OMAHA, Neb. -- Tuesday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials proved to be the most competitive so far as the University of Louisville had four top 16 finishes in prelims and send three swimmers to the semifinals tonight at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.
The marquee event for the Cardinals was the men's 200M butterfly. Cardinal Forever Zach Harting once again showed he is a second half swimmer when he made up more than two seconds on Trenton Julian's on the final lap, splitting 29.88. Harting out-touched the Cal swimmer with a time of 1:55.21 to not only qualify for the finals but will be the co-top seed with Luca Urlando. Â Teammate Nick Albiero, went 1:56.29 in his heat of the 200M Butterfly semifinals. He will advance to the finals as fifth seed tomorrow to vie for an Olympic berth.
In prelims, the Cardinal teammates Harting and Albiero swam in the same heat and were the one-two punch in the morning session. Harting put together a blazing second half to post a time of 1:55.34, which was three-tenths off his best time and 1.3 seconds faster the winning time in this event at 2016 Olympic Trials. Albiero, UofL's 2021 NCAA champ in the 200-yard fly, went 1:56.13 just a tenth off his best time.
Â
Cardinal Abby Hay earned a second swim this morning, advancing to the semifinals of the 200M Individual Medley with a time of 2:15.70
During other prelim swims, UofL freshman Liberty Williams led her heat wire-to-wire with a 16:35.20 in the 1500M Freestyle, beating the runner-up by nine seconds and shaving 10 seconds off her entry time to finish 13th. Â However, only eight moved on to finals in this event. Teammate Alena Kraus put up a 2:02.53 in the 200M Freestyle and Tristen Ulett turned in a time of 2:17.92 in the 200M Individual Medley.
