LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's golf season came to an end in disappointing fashion as the Cardinals finished 11th at the NCAA Louisville Regional in Simpsonville, Ky., on Wednesday.
Despite the frustrating close to the season, senior Lauren Hartlage advanced to the National Championships as one of three individuals on the non-advancing teams. She will compete on May 21-23 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The native of Elizabethtown, Ky., is the first UofL player to qualify as an individual since Olivia Cason advanced in 2016. Her fourth-place finish was the second-best ending in school history during an NCAA event.
"It means a lot to me to be able to advance to nationals," Hartlage said. "I'm glad I decided to stay my fifth year. Playing in the nationals was something I wanted to do during my career, and I'm excited for the opportunity."
Over the three days, Hartlage shot a 2-under-par for tournament, firing a 69-72-73=214 – the fourth-best 54-hole finish in an NCAA match during the school's history.
"I know she wanted to end her career by playing in a national championship," UofL head coach Whitney Young said. "I wish our whole team was going, but I'm extremely proud of her accomplishment."
Entering the day in fourth place and holding a four-shot lead over the seventh-place team, the Cardinals shot 14-over-par to end their 2021 spring season at the par 72, 6,289-yard course.
For the three days, Louisville carded a 20-over-par 293-289-302=884. The Cardinals entered the day at 10-over-par.
Florida State won the regional at 8-over-par, while Texas, UCLA, Auburn, Michigan State advanced to the NCAA Championships, which begin on May 21 in Scottsdale, Ariz. South Carolina and Arkansas are battling it out in a one-hole playoff for the final position.
"It wasn't our day," head coach," Young said. "We couldn't get any putts to drop and it's not like other teams beat us, I feel like we beat ourselves. The golf course was so pure and we had so many compliments on our facility."
Hana Ryskova proved that she will be a top player for the Cardinals next season. The sophomore from the Czech Republic finished in a tie for 16th after shooting a 2-over-par 218 over the three days. Entering the day with a solid 1-over-par 143, Ryskova fired a 75 on Wednesday.
Margot Bechadergue and Molly Lyne each finished with a 10-over-par 226 and in a tie for 51st.. In only her second event on the collegiate level, Lyne was solid shooting a 73 and 74 on the first two days but ended the tournament with a 79.
Carly Haines, who played the last two rounds, finished in 94th after shooting 77-82=159.
