Cardinals Secure 2-1 Win Over Virginia
April 02, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Aboubacar Camara and Eric Danquah recorded goals in the victory.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Led by impressive performances from two freshman contributors, the University of Louisville men's soccer team handled Virginia 2-1 on Friday night inside Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 4-8-1 with the win, while Virginia drops to 7-7-1 on the season.
The two teams spent the first 15 minutes of the game locked in a midfield battle as neither side could take advantage of their opportunities. Louisville found its offense in the 24th minute as forward Aboubacar Camara controlled a blocked attempt around the center box and fired a shot into the back of the net to secure the early lead. The goal marks the fourth in five matches this spring and the freshman's team-high fifth this season.
The celebration would continue as Eric Danquah notched his first career goal in the 35th minute to extend the lead to two before the break. The freshman controlled the ball off a Virginia miscue in the middle third of the field before outrunning the rest of the defenders and sending a shot past a charging goalkeeper for an unassisted breakaway goal.
These early contributions seemed to spark the Cardinals' swarming defense as Louisville entered the half with the 2-0 lead, highlighted by a 6-1 shot advantage.
The second half would feature more of a back-and-forth affair and neither team could find a decent look on goal. Virginia converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute following a yellow card charged to Louisville's Haji Abdikadir to cut the lead to one before Louisville closed the door on the late comeback attempt.
While Virginia finished the match with a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, Louisville goalkeeper Detre Bell held strong between the sticks, racking up four saves on the night, all of which came in the second half.
The Cardinals will welcome No. 1 Clemson to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium next Friday to close out the regular season.
