Cardinals Upset No. 3 Clemson in Regular Season Finale
April 09, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Carlos Sanchis and Aboubacar Camara scored goals for the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Led by an all-around team effort, the University of Louisville men's soccer team took down No. 3 Clemson 2-1 on Friday night inside Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville commanded the early lead when Pedro Fonseca controlled a cross in the attacking third before finding Carlos Sanchis around the center box. Sanchis, who was honored during the pre-game senior night ceremonies, handled the rest sending a right-footer past the Tigers' goalkeeper for his third goal of the spring season.
The Tigers talented offense that came into the match second in the country in goals scored was limited by the swarming Cardinals' defense. The opportunities presented themselves throughout the first half as Clemson outshot Louisville 6-3, but Detre Bell and the Cardinals' back four held strong. Bell finished the first half with five of his eight saves on the night.
The Cardinals quickly doubled their lead right out of half when Aboubacar Camara handled a ball by the way of a blocked Elijah Amo shot. Camara made one move before sending a shot into the back of the net to extend the lead to two in the 51st minute. The goal marked Camara's team-high sixth goal of the season, five of which have been scored in the six matches this spring.
The Tigers mounted a late comeback attempt when Clemson's Hamady Diop converted a penalty kick following a foul on Louisville's Macoumba Ba, but could not get any closer.
Clemson held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks and outshot Louisville 14-9, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, but could not capitalize on their opportunities. Senior goalkeeper Detre Bell finished with his Louisville-high eight saves and was a minute away from his second clean sheet this spring.
With the latest win, the Cardinals finish the regular season 5-8-1 with a 4-2-0 record during the spring.
