Defensive Miscue Downs Cardinals at Virginia
April 16, 2021 | Baseball
Louisville suffered an 8-7 loss in 10 innings on Friday.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – An error on the infield handed the second-ranked University of Louisville baseball team an 8-7 loss in 10 innings on Friday night at Virginia.
With runners at first and second and two away in a tie game, a groundball found its way through the legs of Cooper Bowman at second base, allowing the game-winning run to score.
Friday's contest was in extra innings despite the fact the Cardinals held a 7-1 lead midway through the game.
Louisville (20-11, 12-6 ACC) got on the scoreboard quickly in the series opener with Henry Davis singling home Cooper Bowman to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead three batters into the game. Two innings later, a bad throw on a pickoff attempt allowed Bowman to touch the plate for a second time.
Virginia (17-15, 9-13) got a run back in its half of the third, but the Cardinals broke out the long ball to stretch the lead.
Dalton Rushing hit a breaking ball over the right-centerfield wall for a three-run homer in the fourth and Alex Binelas hit a majestic home run off the top of the scoreboard to score two in the fifth.
The Cavaliers answered right back though, plating five runs in the bottom of the fifth to get back into the game.
Things remained at 7-6 over the next three innings and Louisville headed to the bottom of the ninth with a one-run advantage. However, a one-out solo home run knotted the game at seven and forced the extra frame.
Eight different Cardinals tallied a hit in the loss led by Davis' 2-for-2 night at the plate. Davis also drew three walks, reaching base in all five plate appearances.
The two teams take the field on Saturday for game two of the series with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
