Bowman Homers Twice, Cardinals Race Past Murray State
March 09, 2021 | Baseball
Louisville improved to 8-4 with an 8-3 victory over Murray State.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Cooper Bowman launched a pair of home runs and the ninth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team turned in an 8-3 victory over Murray State on Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Bowman helped lead a Louisville offensive attack that tallied double-digit hits for the fourth straight game. The sophomore went 2-for-3 with the two homers, a hit by pitch, a walk and four RBIs. Bowman has homered three times in the last two games after leading off Sunday's game with a long ball.
Levi Usher had a record-setting night on the basepaths on Tuesday, setting the UofL record (since 2000) with five stolen bases in a single game.
Murray State (5-7) opened the scoring with a run in each of the first two innings, but the Cardinals took control of the game in the bottom half of the second.
Louisville (8-4) started the second with four consecutive singles, including run-scoring knocks from Trey Leonard and Christian Knapczyk. Knapczyk later scored on a wild pitch before Bowman hit a line drive over the wall in left field. Usher followed with a walk before he swiped second and third and then scored on Henry Davis' sacrifice fly to cap the five-run frame.
The Racers got a solo homer in the third to make it 5-3 and the game held there until Bowman put the game away in the seventh with one swing.
Leonard drew a two-out walk before the first baseman dropped what would have been the final out, but instead extended the inning. Bowman made Murray State pay, lifting his second home run of the night onto the berm in left to provide the Cardinals with insurance.
The Louisville bullpen did the bulk of the work on Tuesday, as Tate Kuehner (1-1) earned his first victory of the season with 3.2 innings of relief work. Riley Phillips, Evan Webster and Kaleb Corbett each put together scoreless outings.
The Cardinals return to ACC play this weekend, hosting Boston College for three starting on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Friday evening.
