Cardinals Sweep Bradley in Home Opening Doubleheader
March 05, 2021 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team opened the 2021 home season with a doubleheader sweep of Bradley on day one of the Cardinal Classic. UofL won the first game 9-1 and took the second 9-0, both games ended in five innings via the eight-run rule.
Â
Louisville (5-6) will continue play in the Cardinal Classic on Saturday when they take on DePaul at 12 p.m.
Â
"It was really fun to be back home after playing on the road the last three weeks," said UofL head coach Holly Aprile. "Offensively, I was really pleased with our poise at the plate overall, and that's been a real point of emphasis for us, having quality at bats and I was really proud of them for that. I thought we did a really nice job on the mound, I think that Taylor Roby came out and did well. I thought her pitch total was a little bit higher than we would have wanted from her, but still a quality outing and I thought both Gabby and Jennifer came in and did a nice job as well."
Â
Louisville 9 – Bradley 1 (5 innings)
In the opening game of the tournament, Cassady Greenwood went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run while junior Makayla Hurst was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI to help lead the Cardinals at the plate. Taylor Roby (2-3) pitcked up the win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out three in 4.0 innings.
Â
Louisville jumped to an early lead, using three hits and four walks to put up a six-spot in the home half of the first.
Â
Bradley (1-4) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when Camryn Monteer singled and came around to score on Lucy Mead's RBI hit, bringing the score to 8-1.
Â
The Cardinals tacked on two more runs in the home half of the second. Roby delivered a one-out double and was lifted for pinch-runner Jenna Servi who crossed the plate on Cassady Greenwood's RBI single. Hurst doubled pinch-runner Mia Forsythe home to make the score 8-0.
Â
Louisville completed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Hurst led off with a hit and Jordyn Wolfe entered to run. Singles by Taryn Weddle and Charley Butler loaded the bases for Maddy Newman who drew a walk to plate the game-ending run for the 9-1 final.
Â
The RBI was Newman's second of the game after her sacrifice fly scored Hurst in the Cards' six-run first innings.
Â
Gabby Holloway retired all three batters she faced in the top of the fifth.
Â
Mead and Monteer registered two hits apiece to lead Bradley at the plate. Grace French (0-2) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on three hits in 0.1 inning.
