Louisville Shuts Out DePaul
March 06, 2021 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team finished their second day of play at the Cardinal Classic with a 3-0 win over DePaul Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. Louisville (6-6) will wrap up the weekend on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Miami (Ohio).
Â
"I thought it was a good team win," said UofL Head Coach Holly Aprile. "I thought we had really good starting pitching and closing pitching from Jen. Roby gave us a good start, offensively a little bit slow to get going but got a push to run across and a big insurance run with the home run from Rebecca Chung which I thought was huge. Carmyn [Greenwood] made a huge play in the outfield for us and Jen with a big hit in the last inning for us, all were key plays. This was a great team win overall, everyone contributed and I'm pretty happy about it, DePaul is a good team."
Â
Carmyn Greenwood went 3-for-3 to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Taylor Roby (3-3) picked up the win, holding the Blue Demons scoreless on three hits in 5.0 innings. Jennifer Leonhardt registered her first save of the season, retiring all six batters she faced while striking out three to combine for the shutout.
Â
Louisville used three hits to take a 1-0 lead in the third. Jordyn Wolfe got things started with her single to left field. Carmyn Greenwood's base hit up the middle put runners on first and second. Roby closed out the inning with an RBI single that brought Wolfe home.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth Rebecca Chung crushed one out of left field for her first home run of the season to take a 2-0 lead.
Â
DePaul (5-5) had a chance to cross the plate in the fifth when Skylor Hilger delivered a two-out single, but Carmyn Greenwood's diving catch in left field snatched the Blue Demons opportunity to score, ending the fifth inning.
Â
The Cards tacked on a final run in the sixth when Chung reached on a fielder's choice and Sydney Bickel entered to run for her. Leonhardt smashed a double to left field sending Bickle home for the 3-0 final. Â
Â
Roby finished the day going 2-for-3 with an RBI to help the Cards total eight hits on the day with Chung and Leonhardt tallying one RBI each.
Â
Natalie Halvorson (1-3) took the loss for the Blue Demons giving up three earned runs on eight hits and striking out one in 6.0 innings. Hilger paced DePaul offensively, going 2-for-2 at the plate.
