LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's soccer begins their spring season on the road against Dayton on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The match will not be broadcast, but live stats will be available.
"We are excited to get the spring championship season started," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We have played two exhibitions and they have been great in helping us prepare. Overall, I'm pleased with where we are and I'm excited to play."
The Cardinals finished their shortened fall season with a 4-5-0 record, while the Flyers recently posted their fourth win of the season over Marshall, making them 3-1-0 on the year.
Â
The Cardinals will look to redshirt senior Gabby Kouzelos to protect the goal, just as she has done throughout her career. This past fall, Kouzelos was named to the All-ACC third team after finishing the season with a .788 save percentage, which ranked fourth in the ACC. Her 4.56 saves per game ranked third in the league, while her four shutouts ranked fourth.
Â
Junior Delaney Snyder also returns for the Cardinals after leading the team with four assists in the fall, while adding one goal on eight shots. Freshman Morgan Bentley finished the fall season with eight starts and saw action in all nine matches. She recorded her first collegiate goal, a game-winner at Virginia Tech.
Â
ABOUT THE FLYERS
Â
The Flyers enter the weekend with a 3-1 record and are coming off a 1-0 victory over Marshall, where senior Kara Camarco scored the game-winning goal. On Feb. 22, freshman Itala Gemelli was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after scoring her first collegiate goal, which ended up being the game-winner, in the 2-1 comeback victory against Northern Kentucky. Prior to Gemelli's goal, all five of Dayton's goals had been scored by Gemelli. Sophomore Jessica Sheldon leads the Flyers with three assists. In the net, the Flyers will feature redshirt junior Carly Becker, who has made four starts and has five saves, and sophomore Madelyn Dewey, who has seven saves.
Â
Series History - The Cardinals have won the last three matches against Dayton, but trail 3-11-0 in the all-time series. Louisville is 1-6 on the road against the Flyers. The first matchup between the teams dates back to 1985 where the Cardinals fell 3-1 at Dayton. The schools played continuously up until 2002, but did not meet again until 2011 when the Cardinals defeated the Flyers 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Championship.
Â
Last Meeting (Sept. 12, 2019) - Louisville defeated Dayton 5-2 as five different players scored for the Cards. During the first half, Taylor Kerwin fired the first goal of the game with the assist from Delaney Snyder. Following a foul on a Dayton defender, Maisie Whitsett took the penalty kick to push the Cardinals' lead to 2-0. Louisville finished the game with 11 shots with seven on goal as they cruised to the win.
