Penalty Kick Takes Down Cardinals at No. 6 Wake Forest
March 27, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Louisville lost 2-1 on Saturday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 heartbreaking defeat at No. 6 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday night. With the decision, the Cardinals fall to 3-8-1 on the season, while the Demon Deacons improve to 11-2-1.
The opening third of the match saw Louisville dominate possession of the ball with a high press that limited Wake Forest to its half of the field. In the 10th minute, Elijah Amo took advantage of a takeaway in the final third, serving a clean ball to Aboubacar Camara who controlled the pass in the center of the box before sending a shot into lower left corner of the frame. The freshman forward has now found the back of the net three times in four matches, tying Pedro Fonseca with a team-high four goals.
Play would even out as both teams settled into the flow of the game. Wake Forest would have its share of opportunities after peppering in shots but would routinely be turned away by the smothering Louisville backline. With under three minutes left in the first period, goalkeeper Detre Bell maneuvered through a crowded box to save a Nico Benalcazar header and preserve the 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest came out attacking in the second half, stringing together three shots in the opening five minutes. The Demon Deacons would eventually capitalize in the 55th minute, finding the back of the net on a free kick strike from Omar Hernandez to level the score at one.
Louisville would finish the match with 10 players after William Portman was sent off following a collision with a defender. Despite playing a man down for the final 27 minutes, the Cardinals' defense packed held strong to stifle the home attack to keep the score knotted at one at the end of regulation.
After Louisville held the slight 8-7 edge at half, Wake Forest outshot the visitors 9-1 and possessed the 6-0 corner kick advantage in the second frame.
Less than three minutes into extra time, Hernandez recorded his second goal on the night, this time on a converted penalty kick to give Wake Forest the victory.
Louisville will play its final two matches of the regular season at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium, starting with a tilt against Virginia next Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
