Louisville suffered a 5-3 loss on Saturday at No. 12 Notre Dame
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth, a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom half handed the sixth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team a 5-3 loss at No. 12 Notre Dame on Saturday.
Alex Binelas stepped to the plate leading off the top of the ninth inning with the Cardinals down a run and promptly unloaded on a 2-2 fastball, depositing it over the right-centerfield wall to level the game at three apiece.
However, Notre Dame (11-4, 10-4 ACC) picked up a one-out single in the bottom half and then got a home run of its own to claim victory in the middle game of the weekend series.
Louisville (16-6, 8-3 ACC) held a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh inning behind an outstanding start from Luke Seed.
The southpaw faced the minimum through four, getting a pair of groundball double plays to end both the third and fourth innings. Seed had a pair of runners reach with one away in the fifth, but worked out of it and then retired the side in order in the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals struck for single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Levi Usher singled back through the middle to drive home Lucas Dunn with two outs in the fifth and Cooper Bowman launched his team-leading sixth home run of the season leading off the sixth.
Louisville finally ran into trouble in the seventh. Seed gave up a single to start the inning, but retired the next two hitters. Jack Perkins took over on the mound for the Cardinals, however a walk, single and wild pitch quickly tied the game up at two. Perkins turned the ball over to Tate Kuehner with a 2-1 count on the following hitter and the first pitch turned into a go-ahead double off the centerfield wall.
The game then held at 3-2 in favor of the Irish until Binelas tied the game up in the ninth.
Seed took a no-decision on the day after going a season-long 6.2 innings with one run allowed and three strikeouts.
The two sides will play the rubber game of the weekend on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
