No. 15 Louisville Shows Fight in 14-13 Overtime Loss at No. 5 BC
March 26, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
Hannah Morris led the Cardinals with four goals and an assist, while Sarah Blalock played exceptional defense, limiting BC’s Charlotte North to just one goal.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After falling behind early, No. 15 University of Louisville women's lacrosse rallied to take a three-goal lead before falling 14-13 in overtime at No. 5 Boston College on Friday night.
Â
With the loss, the Cardinals move to 4-5 on the season and 0-4 in the ACC, while the Eagles improve to 6-1 on the year and 2-1 in the league.
"I thought we played extremely well on both ends of the field, I thought we played hard," said head coach Scott Teeter. "The loss stings, but I'm proud of our effort. It's all a part of the learning process and if we keep putting ourselves in these positions, eventually we'll come out on top."
Â
For the second straight game, Louisville faced a 3-0 deficit early as Boston College raced out of the gates with three goals in the first two minutes.
Â
Allegra Catalano got the Cardinals on the board 10 seconds later and Louisville pulled to 5-4 on a goal by Ally Hall with 13:32 to go in the half.
Â
The Eagles answered with three straight goals to build their lead back to 8-4 before Hannah Morris scored two goals in the last five minutes and the Cardinals went into the break trailing just 9-7 despite struggling in the draw circle, 13-4.
Â
In the second half, the Louisville defense stifled the prolific Boston College offense and held them scoreless for the first 17 minutes.
Â
During that stretch, the Cardinals scored five consecutive goals and opened a 12-9 lead with 17:31 to go.
Â
Boston College then responded with four straight goals of their own to regain the lead at 13-12 with 6:20 remaining.
Â
Catalano evened the score with 4:22 to go and both teams had a possession in the final minute, but could not score and the game went into overtime.
Â
Boston College's Charlotte North won the draw and then scored on a shot where she jumped away from her defender and the goal, but was able to find the back of the net.
Â
The goal was North's only one of the game as Louisville's Sarah Blalock did an unbelievable job of face guarding one of the ACC's best players throughout the game, limiting her to just four shots.
"The way that we practiced as a team gets me prepared. I knew that face guarding was my role. I went into the game making sure that I was doing what I needed to do to ensure we would play our best," said Sarah Blalock.
Â
Morris led the way offensively for the Cardinals as she finished with four goals on five shots, while adding an assist. Bella Karstien, Catalano and Hall added two goals each. Alex McNicholas finished with a team-high six draw controls and two assists, while Maggie Foster had a team-high three ground balls.
Â
Rachel Florek finished with six saves and a .300 save percentage, and made key stops down the stretch to help get the game to overtime.
Â
After being dominated in the circle, the Cardinals flipped the script on draw controls early in the second half, which helped them build their three-goal lead. They finished the game with 11 draws to BC's 18.
Â
The Cardinals had 22 shots on goal to Boston College's 20.
Â
Louisville and Boston College play again on Sunday afternoon at 11 a.m. ET on ACC Network.
