Cardinals Complete Competition at NCAA Championships

Freshmen shine in final day of racing
The University of Louisville women showed promise of a bright future as the underclassmen highlighted the finals of the last day of competition at the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Virginia took home its first ever championship with 491 points. NC State took second with 354 points, passing Texas' 344.5.

In the first event of the evening, freshman Liberty Williams stopped the clock at 16:18.49 in the timed 1650 Freestyle final. Virginia's Paige Madden won the event with a time of 15:41.86.

Freshman diver Else Praasterink put up a score of 231.31 in platform diving but missed the final field of eight in her first-ever NCAA appearance. Indiana freshman Tarrin Gilliland clinched the platform title with a score of 338.40.

There were three Cardinals in the B-final of the 200 butterfly. Junior Alena Kraus was into the wall second in the B-final with a time of 1:54.14, dropping 1.07 from her prelim time. Sophomore Abby Hay turned in a 1:55, dropping .41 from her prelim time. Freshman Gabi Albiero put up a 1:56.30. The event was won by Michigan's Olivia Carter, who bested the field by more than a second with a time of 1:53.33. Â

Three freshmen and a junior represented the Cardinals in the final race of the Championships. Gabi Albiero (48.60), Tristen Ulett (48.43), Alena Kraus (48.28) and Paige Hetrick (48.53) won heat 2 of the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:13.84, just ahead of Stanford's 3:14.20.
