Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville is set to welcome Syracuse to Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Family Stadium on Friday for its second match of the spring season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the match will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Led by a trio of second-half goals, Louisville opened the spring schedule last Thursday with a 3-0 win over NC State in Raleigh. Aboubacar Camara broke through for the Cardinals in the 47th minute, finding the back of the net from right inside the six-yard box. Pedro Fonseca recorded his team-high fourth goal of the season before Carlos Sanchis tapped home the third and final goal of the night. The Cardinals are now 2-0-1 this season when scoring two or more goals.
Newcomer Detre Bell made his first start in goal as a Cardinal and finished with his first clean sheet, recording two saves on six Wolfpack shots. Bell had 11 career shutouts at Cal State Bakersfield.
SERIES HISTORY
The series between Louisville and Syracuse dates back to 2005 when both programs were members of the Big East Conference. Louisville owns the 9-2-5 advantage all-time, including a 4-1-2 record at home. While Louisville is undefeated in the last 12 meetings (7-0-5), six out of the last 10 matches have required at least one overtime period.
LAST MEETING
The two teams will meet for the second time in the 2020-21 season. In the last meeting, freshman Nico Diaz and Aboubacar Camara recorded a pair of first-career goals over the final 13 minutes of regulation to force overtime and an eventual 2-2 draw in Syracuse. Despite being outshot 15-4, redshirt junior William Howard recorded five saves in his collegiate debut.
FONSECA PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF
Junior forward Pedro Fonseca entered the 2020 season with high expectations after a strong close to the 2019 season and earning a spot on the ACC Preseason Watch List.
After missing a large chunk of 2019 due to injury, Fonseca returned in time for the postseason and made an immediate impact. The Brazilian scored in two of Louisville's three NCAA Tournament matches and added an assist in the other.
He has picked up right where he left off last season, notching a team-high four of the Cardinals' 13 goals, adding three assists to his total. Fonseca has recorded goals against No.1 Wake Forest, Notre Dame, and No.5 Virginia, in addition to opening the spring portion of the season last Thursday with a three-point performance at NC State.
CARDINALS FRESHMEN FINDING BACK OF THE NET
John Michael Hayden turned in another strong effort on the recruiting trail with the 2020 class and those newcomers made an immediate impact in the fall.
Seven different Cardinals have scored a goal this season, three of which were part of the 2020 signing class. Bryce LeBel notched his first collegiate goal in the road match at Kentucky, while Nico Diaz and Aboubacar Camara each struck at Syracuse. Aboubacar leads all freshman with two goals after recording one in the spring opener against NC State.
