March 12, 2021 | Men's Soccer
The Cardinals improved to 2-0-0 in the ACC spring standings.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A pair of talented freshman performances and a timely goal by Carlos Sanchis secured the University of Louisville men's soccer team a 3-1 win over Syracuse on Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
With the decision, the Cardinals improve to 3-6-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in the ACC spring standings.
Competing in their second match of the spring campaign, Louisville survived an onslaught of early Syracuse corner opportunities before freshman forward Nico Diaz netted the first goal of the night in the 11th minute to bring the home crowd to their feet.
His classmate Aboubacar Camara would extend the lead on beautiful assist from senior midfielder Elijah Amo in the 32nd minute as Louisville headed into the locker room with the 2-0 advantage. The talented class continues to make an immediate impact as three freshmen, Bryce LeBel, Diaz, and Camara have found the back of the net this season.
In the 76th minute, William Portman committed a foul at would result in the successful penalty kick by Syracuse's Simon Triantafillou to cut the lead to one.
Louisville's Sanchis would respond five minutes later on a shot past the on-rushing Syracuse goalkeeper that found corner of the net to close the door on a late Syracuse push.
Despite being outshot 17-9 and their visitors holding the 11-2 advantage in corner kicks, the Cardinals back four held strong throughout the match. Detre Bell earned his second win of the season in goal, recorded five saves on the night.
Friday's win extends the Louisville's 13-match unbeaten streak against their conference opponent. The Cardinals are now 8-0-5 against the Orange over that period, including 5-0-2 in Louisville.
Louisville will be back on the road next Saturday as they head north to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for a battle with Boston College. First kick is schedule for 2 p.m. inside Newton Campus Lacrosse and Soccer Field.
