No. 2 Cardinals Defeated in Series Opener
February 26, 2021 | Baseball
Louisville suffered an 8-3 loss to Western Illinois on Friday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The second-ranked University of Louisville baseball team lost its first game of the season on Friday, dropping an 8-3 decision to Western Illinois at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The loss is the first for the Cardinals in a weekend series opener since losing the first two games of the series at Clemson April 5-6, 2019, and the first opening game loss in a non-conference weekend at home since taking a loss to Xavier on Feb. 28, 2015.
Michael Prosecky made the start on the mound for Louisville (4-1) and immediately dealt with trouble in the first inning. The first three batters reached to load the bases, but the southpaw worked out of the jam. Prosecky picked up a strikeout and then induced a double play to walk away unscathed.
Western Illinois (1-0) got a run on the board in the following inning however, cashing in on a groundout before striking for two more in the fourth.
The Cardinals answered back in the bottom half of the fourth though, with Tim Borden II driving in a run with a fielder's choice and Trey Leonard tying the game up on a two-run double.
The Leathernecks responded with three of their own in the fifth and kept the Cardinals off the board the rest of the way while adding two more insurance runs in the eighth.
Cameron Masterman had a strong showing at the plate, logging a 2-for-2 day and reaching base in all four plate appearances.
Louisville and Western Illinois will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
