
Cardinals Win 200 Freestyle Relay on Day 2 of ACC Championships

Louisville collects gold, two bronzes on the second night in Greensboro.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Gold in the 200 freestyle relay and a pair of bronze medals for the University of Louisville men highlighted the second day of the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Louisville sits in second with 470 points, only 17 points behind current leader Virginia Tech (487). NC State follows closely in third with a score of 456 while North Carolina (372), Florida State (354), Virginia (335), Georgia Tech (307), Pitt (208), Miami (207), Notre Dame (203), Duke (203), and Boston College (98) round out the field.

Hayden Curley kicked the night off for the Cardinals by finishing third in the B-final of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:19.18, fast enough for 11th overall. The first individual event of the meet was won by Notre Dame's Jack Hoagland in 4:11.26.

A trio of Cardinals competed in the C-final, a heat which was won by Ilia Sibirtsev after knocking off nearly three seconds from his morning swim to touch in 4:18.60 for 17th. T.C. Smith (4:21.39) and Colton Paulson (4:24.70) finished 20th and 24th, respectively.

Evgenii Somov collected the Cardinals' first individual medal of the meet after earning bronze in the 200 individual medley. He finished with a final time of 1:44.05, just off his own program record of 1:43.24 set last year.

Jack Wever powered home in 1:45.87 to take second in the C-final, finishing 18th overall in the event. After finishing second a year ago, Georgia Tech's Caio Pumputis won this season in 1:41.76.

In a championship final full of Cardinals, Haridi Sameh Kamel picked up another bronze medal after taking third in 19.15, just shy of the 19.14 he blasted this morning to set a new school record. Tanner Cummings posted a lifetime best of 19.45 for fifth while Michael Eastman (19.55) took seventh and Mihalis Deliyiannis (19.62) placed eighth.

Dalton Lowe sprinted to 19th after racing to third in the C-final with a time of 19.72. The gold medal went to Matt Brownstead of Virginia in 18.88.

Following their winning performance in the 200 medley relay on day one, UofL clinched yet another relay victory. Sameh (19.15), Nicolas Albiero (19.06), Cummings (18.89), and Eastman (18.89) combined in 1:15.99 to break the old program record of 1:16.37 set in 2019.

The relay, whose time currently ranks second in the nation, featured three homegrown Kentucky products in Albiero, Cummings, and Eastman.Â

The Cardinals will compete in the 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 400 medley relay tomorrow. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. with finals starting at 6 p.m. inside the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
