Cardinal Women Move Into Fourth On Day 2 of ACC Championships

A pair of podium appearances boosts the Cards
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Louisville moved into fourth place with a pair of podium appearances at the 2021 ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Virginia maintained its lead with 510 points ahead of NC State (486), Virginia Tech (376), Louisville (311.5), Duke (311.5), Notre Dame (276), North Carolina (244.5), Miami (238), Florida State (214), Georgia Tech (210), Pitt (159) and Boston College (115).
In the 500 freestyle, Virginia's Paige Madden defended her 2020 ACC title with a 4:33.25 to win gold. Louisville freshman Liberty Williams took the B-Final with a 4:44.05 for the win. Teammate Maria Sumida ran away with the race in the C-Finals, posting a 4:43.73, cutting five seconds off her prelims. Madison Luther took third in the C-Final with a time of 4:47.22.
In the A-Final of the 200 IM, Virginia's Alex Walsh shaved two seconds off her lifetime best tonight when she won gold with a time of 1:51.53. Louisville's Abby Hay stopped the clock at 1:56.68 to touch seventh overall. In the B-Final of the 200 IM, Tristen Ulett touched in 1:58.10 for fourth in the heat and 12th overall. In the C-Final of the 200 IM, Diana Dunn put up a 2:01.35.
NC State's Kylee Alons defended her 2020 ACC title in the 50 freestyle, boarding a 21.78. Freshman Cardinal Gabi Albiero made the podium with a bronze medal performance in the 50-freestyle with a 22:03. Teammate Christiana Regenauer tied for sixth in the same race, posting a time of 22.32.
It took the top two times in the country to beat the Cardinals in the final event of the evening. The University of Virginia won the 200 free relay with a 1:26.54 just out-touching NC State's 1:26.59. Those times now lead the NCAA thus far this season. The Cards' A-relay won bronze as Gabi Albiero (22.13), Christiana Regenauer (22.03), Kaylee Wheeler (22.29) and Alena Kraus (22.43) put up a 1:28.88.
The Cardinals will compete in the 100 fly, the 400 IM, the 200 freestyle, the 100 breast, the 100 backstroke and the 400 Medley Relay tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and the finals at 7 p.m. in the GAC.
