Louisville Comes Up Short against No. 8 Florida, 14-7
February 13, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
The Cardinals led early but fell 14-7 to the Gators in their season opener.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse could not overcome No. 8 Florida as they dropped a 14-7 decision in the season and home opener on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"First of all, it was great to get out there and finally play outside competition," said head coach Scott Teeter. "There were a lot of positives today, but there were some uncharacteristic things, as well. We got off to a great start and we were ready to play, we just didn't sustain that throughout."
Â
Louisville got on the scoreboard first, but the game went back and forth early before Florida took the lead 4-2.
Â
Trailing 7-3, Hannah Morris got the Cardinals back within three with 4:10 left during the first half. Louisville's defense held strong to close the half and keep the deficit at 7-4 going into halftime.
Â
Florida scored to start the second half, but Bella Karstien answered to get back within three again. But, then the Gators extended their lead with six unanswered goals.
Â
Paige Richbourg tallied a goal and Caroline Blalock scored her second goal of the game late in the second half, but UofL ultimately fell to Florida, 14-7.
Â
The Cardinals committed only 16 fouls to Florida's 35. Despite the defensive discipline, Louisville was outshot 38-32, including 28-18 in shots on goal.
Â
Blalock led the Cardinals with two goals and two assists, while Alex McNicholas, Hannah Morris, Allegra Catalano, Bella Karstien and Paige Richbourg all contributed one goal each.
Â
Goalkeeper Rachel Florek finished the game with 14 saves.
Â
Louisville is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 18 as they welcome Colorado to UofL Lacrosse Stadium at 3 p.m.
