Florek, Hall Lead Louisville to 12-9 Win Over No. 24 Colorado
February 18, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
Ally Hall led the Cardinals with four goals and an assist in the win.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse came out strong in the first half and held on to beat No. 24 Colorado 12-9 on Thursday afternoon.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals move to 1-1 on the season, while the Buffaloes drop their opener.
Â
"I thought we got off to an excellent start and we had answers whenever Colorado made a push, we always answered right back," said head coach Scott Teeter. "Colorado is a great team, they are nationally ranked for a reason. We found a way to win today and we just need to build off of this."
Â
Louisville got on the scoreboard first for the second game in a row when Caroline Blalock found the back of the net just a minute and a half into the game. The score then went back and forth early as the two teams alternated leads midway into the first half.
Â
The Cardinals took a 4-3 lead on a goal by Hannah Morris with 17:12 left in the first half and finished the first stanza on a 5-1 run to take an 8-4 lead into the break. Ally Hall led UofL in the first half, scoring three goals for her first hat trick of the season.
Â
Louisville continued the pressure to start the second half, as Hall and Caroline Blalock both netted goals to build the lead to 10-4 with 27:04 to go.
Â
Colorado mounted a comeback scoring four straight goals to trim UofL's lead to two, but the Cardinals attack remained strong as Caroline Blalock and Alex McNicholas scored a goal each to build the lead back up to 12-8 with 11:01 remaining in the game.
Â
The Buffaloes got into the scoring column one more time in the final 10 minutes, but the Cardinals went on to a 12-9 win.
Â
Hall led the Cardinals with four goals and one assist, while Caroline Blalock added a hat trick of her own. Morris and Kylea Dobson added two goals each and McNicholas finished one.
Â
Goalkeeper Rachel Florek finished the game with nine saves.
Â
The Cardinals snapped a 24-game losing streak against ranked opponents with the upset. Their last win over a ranked team was a 9-8 victory against No. 7 Syracuse on April 22, 2017.
