Defense Helps No. 25 Louisville Roll Past Cincinnati, 13-5
March 01, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
Louisville beat Cincinnati behind Hannah Morris’ three goals and Rachel Florek’s 15 saves.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse used a strong defensive effort to roll past Cincinnati 13-5 on Monday afternoon.
Â
With the win, the No. 25 Cardinals improve to 2-1 on the season as the Bearcats drop to 1-2.
Â
"I'm really happy with the win. I thought our defense played lights out, but on offense we have some things we need to improve on," said head coach Scott Teeter. "Rachel Florek was a rock in net for us again, which gave us the opportunity to get the win."
Â
Louisville scored first for the third straight game as Bella Karstien put the Cards on the board just 40 seconds into the first half.
Â
The Cardinals kept their foot on the gas pedal, scoring four more goals in the half, including two each from Caroline Blalock and Karstien. Rachel Florek held the Bearcats without a goal for the first 25:43.
Â
Louisville outshot Cincinnati 15-9 in the first half as the Cardinals took a 5-1 advantage into the break.
Â
Hannah Morris opened up the second half with a goal for the Cardinals, but the Bearcats responded quickly scoring one of their own with 27:21 left in the half. The game went back and forth across the next eight minutes until Cincinnati scored back-to-back goals to get within three at 8-5.
Â
Louisville then answered with five straight goals to put the game away, 13-5.
Â
Morris had a team-high three goals, while Caroline Blalock, Karstien and Ally Hall each added two goals. Overall, eight Cardinals got on the board as they outshot the Bearcats 32-25.
Â
Florek concluded the game with 15 saves, which was just two shy of her program record 17 saves against Michigan and Virginia Tech last season. Megan Mangines led Louisville with four draw controls.
Â
The Cardinals went 5-10 on free positions, while limiting the Bearcats to 0-9 on free position attempts.
Â
Louisville travels to Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday to take on No. 9 Virginia at 11 a.m. ET.
