Louisville Stays Home for NCAA Southeast Region Championships
November 11, 2021 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams will remain home for the NCAA Southeast Regional at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park on Friday, Nov. 12.
The women's 6K race will kick off the meet at 11:00 p.m., followed by the men's 10K at 12:00 p.m.
"With every season there are ups and downs. Getting an opportunity to run one more time on our home course is a chance for some to continue on a great season and others to finish the season on a high note," said assistant coach Eric Heins. "I am pleased with the overall development of the team throughout the season and I am excited for them to challenge themselves against the talented teams in the Southeast Region."
The meet will serve for qualification to the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held on Nov. 20 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. The top-two placing teams at each of the nine regions will receive an automatic bid, while the top four individuals who finish in the top-25 and are not associated with a placing team will advance to the championship meet. In addition to the 18 teams who receive automatic qualification, the rest of the 31-team field will be filled with 13 at-large selections following the completion of regional races.
Friday's meet marks the second time that Louisville will compete on their home course this season after participating in the annual Live in Lou Classic on Oct.2. In the men's 8K race, the Cardinals recorded a point total of 196 to take fourth out of 36 teams. The women followed with a 15th-place finish out of 44 teams competing in the 5K.
The fields will consist of programs from Kentucky, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Louisville is one of 39 teams competing on the men's side, led by No.17 Furman and four other programs receiving votes in the latest USTFCCA National Coaches' Poll. The women will face off against three top-30 teams in No.1 NC State, No.9 North Carolina and No.30 Kentucky. The Cardinals will share the course with six other ACC schools: Duke, Virginia Tech, UNC, NC State, Virginia and Wake Forest.
Purity Sanga was Louisville's top-performer on the women's side for the second consecutive season at the ACC Championships on Oct. 29 with a personal-best 6K of 21:31.0. Freshman Megan John and Lexie Paszkiewicz rounded out the scoring card in their postseason debuts. The men's team was led by Ian Kibiwot, who posted a 24th-place finish with a time of 24:18.3. The freshman has finished in the top spot for the Cardinals in each meet this season.
