November 12, 2021 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams closed out their seasons on Friday with the NCAA Southeast Region Championship at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
"Our season will finish with a men's record of 78-32 and women's of 59-61. We have seen our fair share of challenges, but also a great deal of growth this fall," said head coach Dale Cowper. "The team's positive attitude and consistent progress creates a trajectory that I am genuinely excited about.
Ian Kibiwot finished on the heels of All-Region distinction, placing 26th with a 10K debut of 30:01.4. The freshman concluded the fall as the Cardinals' top men's finisher in all five meets. Albert Kosgei was the second Cardinal to cross the line, taking 43rd with a personal-best time of 30:01.1.
Like Kosgei, Ben Ewert earned a personal-best time of 31:24.7 to place 89th in his final cross country meet. Ewert, a graduate student, concludes his career having competed in all but one meet since arriving on campus as a freshman. Isaac Kiprop and Cooper Marchal were the other two scorers in the Cardinals' 13th-place team finish.
Campbell's Athanas Kioko finished 19 seconds ahead of the next runner to take the men's individual title at 28:58.1, while Wake Forest and Furman earned automatic team bids to the NCAA Championships.
In the women's race, Ivine Chemutai was first to finish with a 6K time of 21:46.2. Kassidy Dill crossed shortly after in 22:56.2, while freshman pair Megan John and Lexie Paszkiewicz scored for the second consecutive race. Lindsey Fanz finished in the five-spot with a time of 23:34.1 to close out the 23rd-place team finish.
NC State's Kelsey Chmiel took home the women's individual title at 19:58.4 as the Wolfpack and North Carolina advanced to the championship meet.
