Cardinals Nab Five Wins on First Day at SMU Classic

Louisville trails only Michigan after one day of racing.
The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team are both sitting in second place trailing Michigan by just a handful of points after the first day of racing at the SMU Classic.

 The Michigan men lead the field with 168 points just ahead of Louisville's 161. Missouri (153), Texas A&M (126), SMU (119.5) and Arizona (88.5) wrap up the standings. The Michigan women have a slight edge with the leading total of 174. UofL is second with 172 followed by Missouri (137), Miami (121), Arizona (112) and SMU (112).

The two-day event is being held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
The altered format event features eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Each swimmer may compete in three events per day, and events will be contested in two heats, with one swimmer from each school in each heat. Divers will compete on 1 and 3 meter.

The 400 medley relay team of Tristen Ulett (53.28), Kaylee Wheeler (59.60), Gabi Albiero (52.08) and Christiana Regenauer (48.57) touched in 3:33.53 just being out-touched by Michigan's 3:30.48. The men's race showed the Wolverines won by just a half a second with a 3:07.26. Louisville's Mitchell Whyte (46.57), Evgenii Somov (53.20), Nicolas Albiero (45.06) and Haridi Sameh (42.91) stopped the clock at 3:07.74.

Louisville freshman Emily Herkle turned in a 4:13.56 to touch second in the 400 IM. Daniel Sos won the men's 400 IM for the Cardinals, beating the field by two seconds with a 3:44.92.Â

The Cardinals got their second win when Arina Openysheva turned in the winning time of 1:45.75 in the 200 freestyle. UofL freshman Murilo Sartori was just .12 of a second behind UM's Patrick Callan, with the pair going 1:34.47 and 1:34.59 respectively.

In the 50 free, Gabi Albiero was third with a time of 22.53 on the women's side and Haridi Sameh was second in 19.89, just .06 behind UM's Danny Kovac's 19:83.

In 1-meter diving, Else Praasterink posted a 236.20 score for the Ville to place fifth with teammate Daniel Pinto boarding a 326.40 to place fourth in the men's 3-meter springboard.

Gabi Albiero won the 100 fly with a time of 52.00, to edge Missouri's Sarah Thompson (52.60). Nick Albiero was the top Cardinal in the men's race with a third place time of 46.19.

In the 100 backstroke, Tristen Ulett was second in 53.40 just behind Michigan's Maggie MacNeil's 51.50. Mitchell Whyte took top honors in the men's race with a time of 46.48.

Kaylee Wheeler's time of 1:00.26 was good for second behind UM's Letitia Sim's 59.09 with the men's race seeing Evgenii Somov touching fourth with a 53.74.

The women' won the 800 free relay when Polina Nevmovenko (1:47.82), Arina Openysheva (1:45.12), Paige Hetrick (1:48.13) and Tristen Ulett (1:47.46) combined forces to post a 7:08.53. The Louisville men were into the wall second in the 800 free relay. Murilo Sartori (1:36.06), Nicolas Albiero (1:35.57), Colton Paulson (1:36.49), and Dalton Lowe (1:38.09) posted a 6:26.21.
