Louisville, Ky – With the fifth episode of Where Are They Now, swimming and diving assistant coach Kameron Chastain talked with 2017 graduate Andrea Acquista Carroll about her time at UofL and what she is doing now.
Â
"I fell in love with the city of Louisville, I still love it. I could've seen myself staying there for years," Andrea said of her time as a Cardinal.
Â
Carroll decided to attend Louisville because she thought the campus was beautiful and felt the campus was the perfect size. Seeing the unique nature of how the swimming and diving teams worked so closely and had a strong relationship was a big factor along with being able to be on the team and be in the nursing program at the same time. At Louisville, Carroll came in having her heart set on working in labor and delivery. As a student she had the opportunity to do a student-nurse internship at Norton's Women's and Children's Hospital where she realized she wanted to work with children. Balancing the nursing program with her diving schedule was very hard.
"Luckily I had a great support staff and everyone at Louisville was really awesome helping me. It took a lot of discipline and it was a struggle at times but powered through and I wouldn't change it. It was a really good experience," she said.Â
Â
Today, Andrea Acquista, now Andrea Carroll after marrying teammate Trevor Carroll, lives and works as a nurse in Pittsburgh. She is a children's hospital PRN that does a little bit of everything working in the emergency department to in-patient visits.
"Luckily the virus doesn't seem to affect the kids as much, at least not that we know of right now," Carroll said of the impact COVID-19 has had on her job as a nurse. "We haven't seen a huge influx of sick children; we've actually seen quite the opposite. Between outpatient clinics and elective surgeries being canceled, our hospital has seen a big decrease in numbers which is good, but they've had to cancel nurses, so it's been tough."
Â
Looking back on her time with the team, it was easy to decide that her favorite memory was winning an individual ACC Championship. She said she doesn't remember much about the competition other than her last dive and celebrating with her teammates after, but it will always be a special memory.
"Once I hit the water and my team erupted it was the loudest I think I ever heard that room get. My team just came and rushed me, and it was really cool because I got the biggest group hug and just so much support from the team," said Carroll
As most alumni come back and say, the family atmosphere will always be one of Andrea's favorite parts of being on the team. She said "The friendships and connections I made is something I will cherish forever."
