Cardinals Fall 7-3 to Texas State

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of Louisville softball team put together a late-inning rally, but fell 7-3 to Texas State Saturday morning on day two of the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The Cards return to action Saturday afternoon when they take on Mississippi State at 3 p.m.

Senior Caitlin Ferguson went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Cardinals at the plate.

Texas State (2-1) took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the second when Sara Vanderford doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on a hit by Caitlin Rogers.

The third inning brought three more Bobcat runs when they capitalized on five hits to increase the lead to 5-0.

Texas State had another chance to score in the sixth when two hits and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but junior Paige Schindler entered the game and delivered a strikeout to end the top o fthe inning.

The Cards got on the scoreboard in the home half of the sixth when Ferguson connected leadoff home run. The senior shortstop's second homer of the season made the score 5-1.

The Bobcats countered with a pair of runs in the seventh. McDowell Rogers drew a leadoff walk and Eliza Eberhard followed with a hit to put two on. Both runners moved on a groundout. McDowell's RBI single scored McDowell and Eberhard came home on Tara Oltmann's sacrifice fly to make it a 7-1 game.

Louisville continued its scoring in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Jenna Servi delivered a two-out single and senior Celene Funke stepped up to the plate and registered her second triple of the season to bring her home. Ferguson followed with an RBI hit. Texas State pitcher Dalilah Barrera dealt her 13th strikeout to end the game with the final score 7-3.

Chardonnay Harris (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and striking out four in 2-1 innings. Freshman Taja Felder surrendered one earned run on seven hits with one strikeout in 3.1 innings of relief.. Paige Schindler gave up two earned runs on two hits and struck out one in 1.1 innings of relief.

Barrera (1-0) picked up the win after giving up three earned runs on nine hits and striking out 13 in a complete game effort. Rogers went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI and MacKay was 3-for-5 to lead the Bobcats at the plate.
