Louisville’s Late Rally Comes Up Short Against No. 23 Virginia Tech

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite a late surge and 17 saves from goalkeeper Rachel Florek, Louisville women's lacrosse lost 8-7 to No. 23 Virginia Tech at UofL Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 3-3 on the season, while the Hokies improve to 6-1.
"I'm proud of our effort and I thought they played really hard for 60 minutes," said head coach Scott Teeter. "Rachel (Florek) was tremendous and really gave us chance to claw back and keep it a game."
Ally Hall opened the scoring seven minutes into the game, but the Hokies responded with a 3-0 run of their own.
A pair of goals from Hannah Morris tied the game at 3-3, but Virginia Tech scored with 11 seconds left on the clock and Louisville trailed 4-3 at the break.
The Hokies opened the second half with two unanswered goal and then built the lead to 8-4 with 19:31 to go.
Paige Richbourg and Allegra Catalano found the back of the net and Louisville pulled within two with 12:52 remaining.
Hall later netted her second goal of the game after scooping up a loose ball and firing it into the net with 1:45 left to pull the Cardinals within 8-7.
Louisville had two chances in the final minute to tie the game, but Hall's shot sailed wide and Brenna Shanahan's shot was saved with five seconds to go.
Florek recorded 12 saves in the second half and held the Hokies scoreless for the final 19 minutes of the game. She concluded the game with 17 saves, matching her own program record set eight days ago against Michigan.
Hall, Catalano, and Morris all registered two goals for the Cardinals.
Louisville returns to UofL Lacrosse Stadium on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. game against Longwood.
