Cards Take Down No. 10 Oregon

STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Louisville scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat No. 10/10 Oregon 4-3 on day two of the OK State/Tulsa Invitational Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.

After handing the Ducks their first loss of the season, Louisville (6-11) will return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Cards take on No. 15/14 Oklahoma State.

Senior Celene Funke connected on a home run and a triple and drove in three runs, freshman Jenna Servi had two hits and a run and junior Maddy Newman drove in the game-winning run to help lead the Cardinals offensively. Junior Chardonnay Harris picked up the win, holding the Ducks scoreless on two hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief.

With Louisville trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, senior Caitlin Ferguson led of the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Servi, bringing Funke to the plate. The speedy centerfielder laced a triple to right field to plate Ferguson and even the score at 3-3. Newman followed with a hit to plate Funke and put the Cards on top 4-3.

Oregon (16-1) had a chance to score in the bottom of the seventh when Haley Cruse registered a two-out single and an error on the play sent her to second to represent the tying run, but junior Jordyn Wolfe corralled a catch in right field to end the game and had the Ducks their first loss of the season. Â

The teams played through two scoreless innings before Louisville took a 2-0 lead behind Funke's home run in the top of the third. Jenna Servi delivered a one-out single for the Cards' first hit of the game and Funke stepped up to the plate and lifted a 2-2 count over the right field fence for her first homer of the season.

The Ducks got on the scoreboard in the second when Ariel Carlson's RBI double plated Ailee Bunker who had reached on a one-out walk.

Oregon added a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead in the second. Haley Cruse connected on a two-out hit and came home on a double by Terra McGowan to even the score at 2-2. An RBI single by Rachel Cid put the Ducks on top 3-2.

Harris entered the game to pitch for Louisville with a runner on second and two outs in the fifth. After surrendering a single, the left-hander retired the next six batters before allowing another hit in the seventh en route to earning the win.

Jordan Dail (3-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out three in 1.1 innings of relief.
