Cardinals Come Up Short in 2-1 Eight-Inning Loss to No. 15/14 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. - The University of Louisville softball team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie host No. 15/14 Oklahoma State, but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Cowgirls in eight innings.

Senior Celene Funke had two hits, junior Maddy Newman scored a run and freshman Taja Felder had a double and an RBI. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Roby gave up two unearned runs and scattered three hits while striking out five in 7.2 innings of work.

Oklahoma State (11-5) took an early lead with an unearned run in the second inning when Michaela Richbourg reached on an error and scored on a double by Hayley Busby.

The Cardinals (6-12) answered in the top of the sixth inning. Newman led off the frame with a hit. Felder followed with a pinch-hit double to even the score at 1-1.

With the contest still knotted at 1-1 after the seventh, the teams moved to the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule in effect. For the Cardinals, freshman Jenna Servi was placed as a runner at second base the start the inning. She moved to third on a groundout by Newman, but would be stranded there as the game moved to the home half of the inning.

The Cowgirls started with Chelsea Alexander placed at second base. Kiley Naomi's sacrifice bunt send her to second and a bloop single by Busby plated the game-winning run.

Kelly Maxwell (3-3) picked up the win for Oklahoma State after allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out nine in 8.0 innings.
