
Two Silvers Help Cardinals Move Into Fourth On Day 2 of ACC Championships

Haridi Sameh and the 200 free relay squad win silver
Highlighted by a pair of silver medals, the University of Louisville Cardinals moved into fourth place after Day 2 of racing at the 2020 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships Friday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

North Carolina State holds the lead with a score of 488 ahead of Virginia (438), Florida State (420.5), Louisville (393), Virginia Tech (359), UNC (315), Notre Dame (294.5), Duke (258), Pitt (223), Georgia Tech (216), Miami (197) and Boston College (66).

In the first event of the evening, Colton Paulson won the B-final of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:16.75. Also in the B-final was Hayden Curley, who stopped the clock at 4:18.95 for sixth. T.C. Smith finished fourth in the C-final with a time of 4:19.84 and Jarrett Jones turned in a 4:23.71 in the same heat. Notre Dame's Zach Yeadon took top honors with a time of 4:10.39 for the gold and the second fastest time in the nation to date.

There was a wild finish in the 200 IM and the top five swimmers finished within 0.16 of a second of each other. The race was won by Frederick Schubert of Virginia, who put up the winning time of 1:43.09 to reset his own school record. Cardinal Evgenii Somov, who qualified with the top time, just missed the podium by .04 of a second with a 1:43.24, an invited time in 2019 to set a new school record. Teammate Daniel Sos finished fifth with a 1:43.24 and was also under his own school record.

In the 50 freestyle, NC State's Nyls Korstanje won his first ACC gold in this event after qualifying with a 19.07 this morning, taking the top of the podium with a 19.25. Louisville's Haridi Sameh won silver in the 19.31, shaving two-tenths from his time this morning and putting up the third fastest time in school history as well as an invited time from '19. Mihalis Deliyiannis touched in 19.65 for 7th place in the A-final with the ninth fastest time in school history. Andrej Barna finished with a 19.97 for an 8th place finish.

The Cardinal 200 freestyle relay team won silver with a 1:16.94 with the second fastest time in school history and an NCAA A-cut put up by Haridi Sameh (19.32) Andrej Barna (19.09) Mihalis Deliyiannis (19.27) and Tanner Cummings 19.26). The Cards were edged by Florida State's gold medal time of 1:16.69.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday morning at 10 a.m. when they will compete in the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 Free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 400 medley relay.
