Cards Wrap Up Bama Bash with Loss to No. 10/13 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 10-0 to No. 10/13 Alabama in the final game of the Bama Bash Sunday at Rhoads Stadium.

Louisville (5-9) will wrap up the month of February next weekend when the Cards travel to Oklahoma for the Oklahoma State/Tulsa Invitational where they will take on Illinois-Chicago, No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 15 Oregon and Tulsa.

The Cardinals had an early opportunity to score when senior Celene Funke led off the game with a single, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Two outs later, sophomore Cassady Greenwood earned a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs, but a groundout ended the threat.

The Crimson Tide (9-5) got on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning. Skylar Wallace singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Bailey Hemphill. KB Sides followed with a single and an error on the play sent Hemphill home. Sides eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kaylee Tow.

Alabama added three runs in the second and tacked on two more unearned runs in the third, extending the lead to 7-0.

Louisville had runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and fifth, but could not push a run across.

In the fifth inning, Wallace's three-run homer brought the final score to 8-0.

Funke, junior Maddy Newman, sophomore Taylor Roby, freshman Jenna Servi and freshman Elana Ornelas each had a hit as the Cardinals tallied five in the game. Chardonnay Harris (2-5) took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits in 2.0 innings.

Montana Fouts (2-2) struck out seven to get the win in a complete game effort. Wallace led the Crimson Tide at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks and five RBIs.

After going 3-2 on the weekend, the Cardinals place three players: Carmyn Greenwood, Cassady Greenwood and Chardonnay Harris on the Bama Bash All-Tournament Team.

Redshirt junior Carmyn Greenwood led Louisville offensively on the weekend with a .538 batting average (7-for-13). The leftfielder had a double, scored four runs and had a stolen base. Sophomore catcher Cassady Greenwood posted a .500 batting average (6-for-12) with two runs, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Junior LHP Chardonnay Harris went 2-1 in the circle and registered a no-hitter in the 9-0 win against Penn State to open the weekend. The junior issued a season-high seven strikeouts in the 8-4 victory over Wichita State and finished the tournament with 11 Ks in 12.0 innings of work.
