Five-Run Sixth Lifts Cards to 8-4 Win Over Wichita State

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Louisville softball team score five runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 4-3 deficit and beat Wichita State 8-4 Saturday at Alabama's Rhoads Stadium on day two of the Bama Bash.

The Cardinals will return to action Saturday afternoon when the take on host No. 10/13 Alabama at 3 p.m.

Junior Maddy Newman went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Senior Celene Funke was 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI and sophomore Cassady Greenwood had two his and drove in a pair of runs to help lead the Cards at the plate.

Chardonnay Harris (2-4 picked up the win after giving up four earned runs on eight hits and issuing a season-high seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Roby held the Shockers in check, surrendering two hits and striking out two in 2.0 innings of relief.

Louisville (5-7) jumped to an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Senior Celene Funke led off the game with a double, stole third and came home on a two-out double by sophomore Cassady Greenwood.

The Shockers (5-9) answered with a one-out solo home run by Bailey Urban to even the score at 1-1.

The Cards regained the lead with two runs in the third when freshman Jenna Servi connected on a leadoff single, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Funke and crossed the plate on a hit by junior Maddy Newman. After a walk was issued to redshirt sophomore Taylor Roby, Newman score on an RBI single by Cassady Greenwood.

Wichita State used back-to-back doubles by Urban and Madison Perrigan to cut the lead to one run in the bottom of the fifth. One out later, Lauren Mills sent a shot over centerfield to put the Shockers on top 4-3.

The lead was short-lived as the Cards used two hits, three walks, a hit batter and an error to put up a five-spot – all with two outs in the sixth. Junior Jordyn Wolfe singled, freshman Elana Ornelas walked and Servi reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with two outs for Funke whose infield single plated Wolfe to even the score at 4-4. Newman was hit by a pitch to plate Ornelas. Roby walked to bring home Servi and an error sent Funke and Newman home to put Louisville on top 8-4.

In the home half of the seventh, the Shockers used a pair of hits to put two runners on, but the Cardinals' defense held strong for the 8-4 final.
