Florek Shines in 15-11 Setback at No. 14 Michigan
February 21, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
Rachel Florek recorded a program-record 17 saves in the loss.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rachel Florek recorded a program-record 17 saves, but Louisville women's lacrosse came up just short in a 15-11 loss at No. 14 Michigan on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-2, while the Wolverines move to 2-2.
"We battled back and we played really well, at times," said head coach Scott Teeter. "It was a competitive, physical game, but we have to be more consistent. We spotted a ranked team five goals and it's hard to win games that way."
Michigan jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but Brenna Shanahan found Shayla Scanlan for the first of her four goals with 19:22 to go in the first half to put Louisville on the board.
That goal jump-started a 6-2 run by the Cardinals to end the half and Scanlan's goal with six seconds left trimmed the Michigan lead to 7-6 heading into the locker room.
Louisville pulled even at 7-7 on a goal by Paige Richbourg with 25:56 remaining.
After the Cardinals tied the game, twice Michigan rebuilt its lead to two goals, but UofL responded both times.
Caroline Blalock's goal at 20:30 evened the score at 9-9 and then Scanlan scored her fourth goal on an assist from Ally Hall to tie it at 11-11 with 11:27 to go.
Florek kept Michigan off the board with two saves on one possession, but eventually Michigan regained the lead at 12-11 with 6:38 to go.
Louisville failed to get a shot off the rest of the way and eventually fell 15-11.
Scanlan led the way offensively with four goals on seven shots. Shanahan added two goals and an assist, while Sarah Blalock also finished with two goals. Caroline Blalock had five ground balls to go along with her one goal.
Florek continued her strong start to the season by recording a program-record 17 saves and finishing with a .531 save percentage.
"Rachel had a huge game for us today. Without her, the start could have been worse, but she really kept us in it," added Teeter.
Louisville returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to play at Vanderbilt at 4 p.m. ET.
