Louisville Hangs On For 15-13 Win at Vanderbilt
February 25, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
Brenna Shanahan finished with six assists in the win.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Shayla Scanlan netted four goals and Brenna Shanahan recorded six assists as Louisville women's lacrosse sealed a 15-13 victory over Vanderbilt on Tuesday afternoon in Nashville.Â
Â
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Commodores drop to 3-2.
Â
"We battled some adversity today, but I was proud of our team for the way they fought through it and made enough plays to get the win," said head coach Scott Teeter.
Â
Vanderbilt jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Louisville responded. Izzy Holmes found the back of the net and back-to-back goals from Allegra Catalano put the Cardinals up 3-2.
Â
From there, it was back and forth between the Cardinals and the Commodores. Goals from Ally Hall and Paige Richbourg less than a minute apart knotted the game at 7-7 heading into the break.
Â
Three straight goals by Ally Hall, Scanlan, and Hannah Morris gave the Cardinals an 11-8 lead with 21:10 remaining. Shanahan recorded her sixth assist when she connected with Scanlan, who completed her hat trick, to give Louisville a 14-10 lead with 7:42 left on the clock.
Â
Three unanswered Vanderbilt goals put the Commodores within one in the final two minutes of the game and the Cardinals called timeout.
Â
Coming out of the timeout, Scanlan netted her fourth goal of the day with 72 seconds remaining to seal the 15-13 win.
Â
"Vanderbilt really pushed us late, but we called that timeout and hit Shayla (Scanlan) on the play that we drew up," added Teeter.
Â
Shanahan's six assists were a new career-high and marked the second-most in a game in program history.
Â
Hall, Richbourg, Catalano, Morris, and Caroline Blalock all recorded two goals. Shanahan and Alex McNicholas both added six draw controls as Louisville won the draw control battle, 20-10.
Â
Rachel Florek finished with 14 saves and a .519 save percentage.
Â
Louisville returns home on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. E.T. for its conference opener against Virginia Tech.
