Louisville Baseball Defeated in Home Opener
February 19, 2020 | Baseball
The Cardinals took a 10-3 loss against Wright State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team suffered a 10-3 setback against Wright State in the 2020 home opener on Wednesday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium.
For Louisville (1-3), it's the first three-game losing streak since May 16-19, 2017 when the Cardinals lost at Indiana and twice at home to Florida State.
Wright State (1-3) jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the first and second innings. The Raiders plated two on a two-out triple in the first before adding two more in the following frame.
The Cardinals picked up two of their own in the bottom half of the second with Tim Borden II lining one past the third baseman to bring home Andrew Benefield and Trey Leonard.
WSU stretched the margin back to four in the fifth though, sending runs across on a fielder's choice and two-out single to make it a 6-2 contest.
UofL threatened with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate with two outs in the seventh, but the Cardinals got only one run home with Leonard scoring on a wild pitch. However, the Raiders immediately answered with a run of their own in the eighth. Wright State then added three in the ninth to reach the final margin.
Louisville continues its eight-game homestand this weekend with three games against Valparaiso. First pitch of the series opener on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m., ET.
