
Louisville Welcomes in Marquette on Monday

The Cardinals and the Golden Eagles will begin play at 1 p.m. ET.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse (1-1) welcomes in Marquette (1-1) on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET. The game will broadcast on ACC Network Extra.

Junior Caroline Blalock leads the team with seven points through two games. She had two goals and two assists vs. Denver. She was named preseason All-ACC by the league's coaches.

Through two games, junior goalkeeper Rachel Florek has 22 saves and a .458 save percentage. She had 13 saves in the loss to No. 9 Denver, which tied her career high. She had 13 saves last season in a 9-8 loss vs. Vanderbilt on 2/27/19 and in a 9-8 loss vs. Delaware on 3/31/19.

Despite the loss to Denver, UofL controlled the draw in the first half, as they finished the first stanza with eight draws to Denver's three and ultimately won the draw control battle for the game, 13-10. They lost the draw control battle at Cincinnati, 17-12. Ironically last season, they were 5-0 when winning the draw control battle and 0-13 when not.

Marquette enters Monday's game with a 1-1 record. They fell 18-3 at No. 7 Notre Dame in their season opener before winning 17-6 against Cincinnati at home.

They were picked fourth in the Big East preseason coaches' poll. Shea Garcia, Madison Kane and Jocelyn Miller were selected for the league's all-preseason team. The projected finish of fourth is the second highest preseason mark for the Golden Eagles since they joined the league for the 2014 campaign (projected third before the 2019 season).

Garcia became the first Golden Eagle in program history to take home Big East Freshman of the Year honors last season. She scored 29 goals to go along with eight assists. She led the team with an .859 shots on goal percentage. Kane, who started 17 of her team's 18 games at midfield last season, netted 14 goals and tallied nine assists. A junior from Manorville, N.Y., Miller has started in all 36 games for MU in the past two seasons. She earned first team All-Big East honors last season with 37 ground balls, 25 caused turnovers in 2019.

Marquette made Big East semifinal appearances in 2018 and 2019. Last season, the Golden Eagles finished 9-9 (3-2) overall, placing second in the conference, for its best league finish in program history.
Series History - UofL is 5-1 all-time against Marquette and 4-0 at home. The last meeting in Louisville was a 16-8 win for the Cardinals in their 2018 home-opener. Louisville lost 15-12 at Marquette last season, which marked the Golden Eagles' first ever win over the Cardinals.

The Last Meeting (Feb. 10, 2019) - Louisville fell at Marquette 15-12, despite a pair of hat tricks from Tessa Chad and Ally Hall. Marquette got on the board first, but Chad responded less than a minute later to even the score at 1-1. The Golden Eagles went on to score five unanswered goals over the next seven minutes. The Cardinals countered with a 6-1 run of their own, capped by back-to-back goals by Shayla Scanlan to even the score at 7-7. Caroline Blalock pulled the Cardinals within one on a free position goal. However, Marquette went on another scoring run to extend their lead to 12-8. The Cardinals fired off the next three goals to find themselves down by just one with 12 minutes left in regulation. Louisville's comeback attempt would not be enough as Marquette finished the game on a 3-1 run to seal the 15-12 victory.
