Kirian Named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville baseball junior pitcher Michael Kirian was named to the 2020 Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Monday.
Kirian was one of 70 student-athletes on the initial Watch List for the 16th annual award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.
The New Riegel, Ohio, native was 3-1 last season with five saves and a team-leading 1.69 ERA. Kirian made a team-high 26 appearances on the year, striking out 42 batters in just 32 innings.
The junior has garnered preseason All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and D1Baseball heading into the 2020 season.
Louisville has captured the Stopper of the Year award twice previously, with Nick Burdi earning the honor in 2014 and Lincoln Henzman recognized in 2017.
Kirian and the top-ranked Cardinals open the 2020 season Friday with a three-game series on the road at No. 18 Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. Louisville's home opener is set for Feb. 19 against Wright State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
