Cardinals Battle Orange to 2-2 Draw
October 16, 2020 | Men's Soccer
Louisville moves to 1-3-1 for the season
Syracuse, NY- After two late goals by a pair of freshmen, the University of Louisville men's soccer team recorded a 2-2 draw Friday night at Syracuse.
Â
Louisville tested the Syracuse backline throughout the first 20 minutes, but the home defense held strong as the limited offensive opportunities were unable to find the back of the net. The best chance in the first half for the Cardinals came in the 11th minute as senior forward Emil Elveroth recorded a shot that was blocked by the Orange defense.
Â
Louisville (1-3-1) preserved the scoreless contest until Syracuse's Deandre Kerr capitalized on a two-on-one advantage that shot past the Cardinal defense in the 36th minute. This would be the first of two goals on the night for the freshman forward. Louisville would be outshot 4-1 through the first 45 minutes.
Â
The back-and-forth second half featured better offense from both teams that resulted in three goals in a span of 10 minutes. Redshirt junior William Howard shifted the momentum in favor of the Cardinals with an impressive save on a penalty kick in the 52th minute. The goalkeeper was steady throughout the contest for the Cardinals and tallied five saves in his first collegiate appearance.
Â
Syracuse (0-2-1) would recapture the momentum when Kerr recorded his second goal of the night in the 77th minute. This response looked to the decider until the youth of the Louisville team responded with their own offensive contribution.
Â
Freshman Nico Diaz would find the high right of the goal on a well-placed assist from Carlos Sanchis to record his first career goal in the 77th minute. Three minutes later, Aboubacar Camara would share the spotlight scoring his own timely first career goal in the 80th minute to level the match at two.
Â
The defenses would dominate throughout the overtime periods to record the third-straight draw in the series.
Â
The Cardinals will be back in action next Friday when they host Pittsburgh at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The live broadcast of the game can be found on ACCNetwork Extra.
