October 13, 2020 | Baseball
The Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the Pizza Bowl with an 11-2 win on Tuesday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The bats came alive in game three of the University of Louisville baseball Pizza Bowl series, as Snider's Dodgers turned in an 11-2 victory over Vrable's Braves on Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Dodgers pounded out 11 runs on 11 hits, led by a pair of two-run home runs off the bat of Ben Bianco. The first baseman was 2-for-3 on the night, driving in four and scoring three times. Trey Leonard added three hits and three RBIs of his own, while Levi Usher and Christian Knapczyk each had two hits.
Evan Webster scattered five hits over 3.2 innings to pick up the victory. Seamus Barrett and Gavin Sullivan each turned in scoreless relief outings to help seal the win.
The Dodgers jumped on the board quickly on Bianco's first homer of the night in the second inning. After another run in the third, they blew the game open with a five spot in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Leonard brought home two with a bases loaded single in the five-run fourth, while Bianco went the other way for his second two-run blast of the night in the fifth.
Vrable's Braves scored their only two runs of the night in the sixth, getting a two-run shot from Dalton Rushing, his second in as many games.
Seven different batters picked up a hit for the Braves, while J.R. Langworthy turned in a strong relief outing with a pair of scoreless innings.
Game four of the Pizza Bowl is scheduled for Friday evening at 6 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on 93.9 The Ville.
ABOUT THE PIZZA BOWL
Upon his hiring as Louisville head coach in the summer of 2006, Dan McDonnell immediately created an atmosphere of competition throughout the Cardinals baseball program. Whether it's through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell creates competitive situations to give his players numerous opportunities to prepare for what they will see during conference and postseason games.
One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following approximately six weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra-competitive three-game or five-game intra-squad series. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans.
