Five Goals Lift Cardinals Past Eastern Michigan

Cardinals hold Eagles scoreless to improve to 4-0 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Eastern Michigan 5-0 on Sunday night at Lynn Stadium after a pair of goals in the first half and three in the second. The Cardinals extend their winning streak to 4-0 while the Eagles drop to 1-2-1.

After a few strong scoring chances early in the first half, Emina Ekic found the back of the net to put the Cardinals up in the 17th minute. The junior midfielder fired a shot from outside the box to give Louisville the 1-0 advantage.

A foul called on an Eagle defender awarded the Cardinals a penalty kick in the 37th minute. Ekic scored her second goal of the season to double Louisville's lead after sending the ball to the bottom right corner of the net.

At the end of the first half, the Cardinals' backline held Eastern Michigan to only one shot on goal. Louisville concluded the first 45 minutes of action with 13 shots and Eagle goalkeeper Mabel Dunn made three saves.

The Cardinals continued pressing quickly into the second half, and the pressure paid off after increasing their lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute. Taylor Kerwin sent a pass to Cassie Amshoff, who scored her first career goal after burying a shot into the lower left corner.

Louisville continued their offensive dominance and extended their lead to 4-0 in the 77th minute. Jolene Ballard sent a shot over the Eagle's goalkeeper to the upper right corner of the net to record her first career goal.

There was no stopping the Cardinals offense, as Louisville quickly increased their lead by five behind Jessica De Filippo's first goal of her career. A clean pass from Corinne Dente in the 83rd minute gave De Filippo the opportunity to send a shot into the upper left corner of the far post.

Louisville finished the match with a total of 27 shots and Dunn made eight total saves. The Cardinals' strong collective defense held the Eagles to only two shots on goal and Gabby Kouzelos had a pair of saves.

The Cardinals will continue their seven-game home stretch at Lynn Stadium as they host Indiana at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.
