Cardinals Defeated 14-3, Series Even with Florida State
May 17, 2019 | Baseball
The rubber game of the series and regular season finale is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., ET.
Louisville (42-13, 20-9 ACC) managed just six hits on the night as the Seminoles evened up the weekend series.
Despite the final score, it was the Cardinals that struck first on Friday evening. Lucas Dunn led off the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line. Jake Snider was hit by the next pitch and Logan Wyatt drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. UofL would only manage one run though, as Danny Oriente was hit on the front shoulder with a pitch to force home the game's first run.
Florida State (35-19, 17-12) responded immediately in the second, sneaking a home run just over the centerfield wall with one away to tie the game up. The Seminoles then added five more in the third to open the game up.
The Cardinals tried to claw their way back into the game in the fourth with a leadoff homer off the bat of Zach Britton, the fourth of the season for the sophomore and second in as many days. Zeke Pinkham and Dunn had back-to-back doubles later in the inning to plate a second run that pulled the Cardinals back within three.
The Seminoles answered right back though, plating three more in the top of the fifth and cruised the rest of the way. FSU added three more in the eighth and a pair in the ninth on its way to victory.
Dunn had half of Louisville's offensive output at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Britton, Pinkham and Drew Campbell had the other base hits on the evening.
Nick Bennett (6-3) allowed six runs on nine hits over 2.1 innings for the loss. Adam Elliott had a scoreless relief appearance, surrendering just one baserunner over his 2.2 innings.
The regular season wraps up on Saturday with the rubber game of the three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium. Louisville will recognize its five seniors during a ceremony prior to Saturday's game.
