No. 7 Cardinals Finish Season Sweep of Kentucky
April 17, 2019 | Baseball
Louisville defeated its in-state rival 18-6 on Tuesday night in Lexington.
Louisville (29-8) completes the home-and-home regular season sweep of the Wildcats for the first time since 2016.
The Cardinals finished with a season-high 18 runs and 23 hits in the victory. The 23 hits were the most for Louisville since April 24, 2005 at Saint Louis, while the 18 runs were the most scored against the Wildcats since 1976.
Despite the final score, it was Kentucky (20-17) that held the early edge on Tuesday night. The Wildcats hit a solo home run in the first and plated four more runs in the second to lead 5-1 after two innings.
Trailing by four, Tyler Fitzgerald tripled home Jake Snider to begin the offensive roll for the Cardinals. Logan Wyatt followed with a groundout that scored Fitzgerald and cut the deficit to two.
The Cardinals tied the game up in the fourth on a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Lucas Dunn and Snider pushed them in front with a run-scoring single one pitch later.
The offensive onslaught continued in the fifth with RBI singles from Alex Binelas and Justin Lavey, and Drew Campbell capped the four-run frame with a two-run homer just inside the right field foul pole.
Lavey and Zeke Pinkham added run-scoring hits in the sixth, with Wyatt and Zach Britton pushing runs across in the seventh. Pinkham picked up two more RBIs in the seventh as well, doubling home Wyatt and Binelas to make it a 16-6 contest.
A UK error put another run up for Louisville in the eighth, and Binelas finished off a huge night with a RBI double to the wall in centerfield.
Binelas was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two more driven in. Lavey, Snider and Wyatt all had three hits in the win with Wyatt touching the plate four times. Lavey and Pinkham each drove in three runs.
Eleven different Cardinals picked up a hit in the win with nine driving in at least one run.
Louisville welcomes No. 22 Miami to Jim Patterson Stadium for the first of three. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., ET.
