No. 7 Cardinals Complete Midweek Sweep of Ole Miss
March 13, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals picked up a 10-8 win on Wednesday to sweep the two-game series at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (13-4) pounded out 13 hits and reached double digit runs for the sixth time this season to pick up its eighth win in its last nine games. The victory wraps up a 14-game homestand that saw the Cardinals post a 12-2 record.
Adam Elliott (1-1) was first out of the bullpen for the Cardinals on Wednesday, limiting the Rebels to just one run in 2.2 innings for his first win of the season. Shay Smiddy and Jared Poland each had scoreless outings as UofL sent six different pitchers to the mound on the day.
The day got off to a rocky start for the Cardinals, as Ole Miss (12-5) plated a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the first inning.
Louisville responded in a big way though. Tyler Fitzgerald started the bottom half of the frame with a double into the right-centerfield gap and a pair of hit batters loaded the bases. Danny Oriente immediately cut the deficit in half with a single to right and Drew Campbell knotted the game up at two on a groundball.
Zeke Pinkham kept the scoring going for the Cardinals with a run-scoring single of his own and Alex Binelas capped the five-run inning with a line drive to center that brought two across the plate.
UofL tacked another run on with a Zach Britton single in the second and Binelas launched his first collegiate home run in the third, a two-run shot, to give the Cardinals an 8-2 lead after three innings.
Oriente added a second RBI on a single in the fifth and Jake Snider doubled home Justin Lavey in the sixth to stretch the margin to 10-3 with the Cardinals cruising with three innings to play.
The Rebels wouldn't go quietly however, scoring twice on a single in the eighth before back-to-back homers in the ninth made it a 10-8 game with just one away. Bobby Miller was able to seal the win though, inducing a groundout and fly out to send the Cards to their 13th win of the season.
Fitzgerald had three hits on the day to lead the offense, making him 9-for-16 in his last four games. Snider, Oriente, Pinkham and Binelas all had multi-hit afternoons as well, with Binelas driving in a career-best four runs.
Louisville returns to conference action on Friday for the first of three games against Duke. The weekend series will be played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m., ET on Friday.
