Cardinals Fall to No. 15 Duke in Overtime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse forced double overtime against No. 15 Duke, but ultimately fell 11-10 on Sunday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in ACC play, while the Blue Devils improve to 6-1, 2-0.
The Blue Devils struck first just over a minute into the game, but did not hold the lead for long as Paige Richbourg found the back of the net less than two minutes later to even the score at 1-1.
Duke then fired off two quick goals under the span of a minute, but the Cardinals responded with four straight goals by Richbourg, Caroline Blalock and Tessa Chad to take a 5-3 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Duke's Charlotte North scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 5-5. However, Chad netted her third goal of the game on a free position attempt in the final minutes of the half to give the Cardinals a 6-5 edge heading into the break.
Coming out of the locker room, Duke rallied with a 3-0 run over the opening 12 minutes of the second half to regain the lead at 8-6.
Caroline Blalock then tallied her second goal of the game to halt the Blue Devils' run with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation, moving the score to 7-6 in favor of Duke.
Both Rachel Florek and Duke's Gabbe Cadoux registered a pair of key stops over the next seven minutes, but Chad found the back of the net for the fourth time of the game to tie the score at 8-8 with seven minutes left on the clock.
The Cardinals and Blue Devils traded a pair of goals over the next six minutes for the sixth tie of the game at 10-10.
With just 20 seconds remaining, Alex McNicholas forced a Duke turnover to give the Cardinals one final opportunity in regulation, but Sarah Blalock's shot sailed just wide to send the game into overtime.
Neither team was able to get anything going in the first overtime period, forcing double overtime. However, Duke's North scored her seventh goal of the contest just under a minute and a half into the second overtime to seal the 11-10 victory for the Blue Devils.
Chad led the way with four goals, her second consecutive hat trick and fifth of the year. Richbourg, McNicholas and Caroline Blalock each tallied two goals apiece.
Shay Clevenger registered a team-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Florek also collected five ground balls and recorded seven saves.
The Cardinals caused 15 turnovers as the Blue Devils' accumulated a season-high 25 turnovers, but Duke won the draw control battle 19-7.
Louisville will be back in action on Tuesday at 12 p.m. as they head to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on Duquesne.
