Louisville will go head-to-head against Kentucky on Sunday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The spring season gets underway on Sunday for the University of Louisville women's golf team, as the Cardinals travel to Birmingham, Ala. for the Battle of the Bluegrass State. Sunday's event will be played at Hoover Country Club.
Louisville will compete against Kentucky in its annual head-to-head match. The two teams will play a best-of-five 18-hole match play format.
All eight players will be competing for Louisville on Sunday. The pairings for match play will be decided on Saturday night.
"We are really looking forward to the spring and building off what we did to close the fall," head coach Courtney Trimble said at the Louisville spring sports media day. "We made it to the national championship finals last year and most of that group is back, so they've tasted that and I am really excited to see how far we can go."
The Cardinals played in five events during the fall season, winning the Alexa Stirling Intercollegiate in their most recent outing. Louisville also took third in the Cardinal Cup and Minnesota Invitational.
Louisville enters the spring ranked 28th in the Golfstat rankings. The Cardinals are looking to get back to the NCAA Championship, after advancing to the championship in 2018 for just the second time in program history.
Junior Lauren Hartlage leads the Cardinals into the spring with a 72.57 stroke average and three top-10 finishes in the fall, while freshman Mairead Martin made an immediate impact in her first season with two top-10 showings and a stroke average of 73.57.
2019 marks the fifth straight year the two programs have competed in the Battle of the Bluegrass State. Louisville has won three of the previous four, including last spring when the competition was held as part of the Florida Classic. This year is the first for the match play format.
