Cardinals defeat Kentucky 4-1 in best-of-five match play.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The spring season started with a bang for the University of Louisville women's golf team with a victory over Kentucky on Sunday in the Battle of the Bluegrass State. The event was played at Hoover Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
Louisville downed Kentucky 4-1 in the five-player match play format to win the Battle of the Bluegrass State for the fourth time in five seasons.
"Today was a great way to start off the spring season with a win against Kentucky," head coach Courtney Trimble said. "We always want to bring the Battle of the Bluegrass trophy back to Louisville. The match today provided great competition and gives us a good building block to begin the rest of our spring season."
In a battle of top players, junior Lauren Hartlage downed Kentucky's Leonie Bettel, an ANNIKA Award candidate, 2 & 1. Delaney Shah was victorious by the same score over Claire Carlin.
Olivia Cason needed a 19th hole, but the senior came out with a 1 up victory. Lauren Thibodeau grabbed the largest victory of the day, winning 5 & 3 over Rikke Svejgard Nielsen.
Mairead Martin was 1 down in her match against Sarah Shipley for Kentucky's lone point on the day.
Three other individual matches were played, with Linda Trockel falling 6 & 5, Margot Bechadergue dropping her match 4 & 3 and Meghan Nay taking a 1 down loss in 19 holes.
Louisville is back on the course for the Moon Golf Invitational Feb. 18-19 at Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Fla.
