Louisville Falls in Season Opener at No. 7 Northwestern
February 08, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
Tessa Chad led the Cardinals with three goals.
EVANSTON, Ill. - Tessa Chad scored three goals, but it wasn't enough as Louisville women's lacrosse fell at Northwestern 21-11 on Friday night.
The loss ends a streak of four straight season opening wins for the Cardinals.Â
"Northwestern is a great team and they exploited our youthfulness a bit tonight," said head coach Scott Teeter. "We did some positive things, especially there in the second half, but we just need work harder and avoid costly mistakes."
Louisville got their first goal of the season just a little over a minute in when Sarah Blalock found the back of the net. The goal pulled the game even at 1-1.Â
Kayla Marshall's first goal then made the score 3-2, but Northwestern scored the next nine goals to extend its lead to 12-2 and went into the locker room at half with a 15-4 advantage.
Trailing 20-6 with 15:08 to go in the game, the Cardinals reeled off five straight goals to pull within 20-11 and ultimately won the second half, 7-6.
Chad led the way with three goals on eight shots. Caroline Blalock, Sarah Blalock and Kayla Marshall added two goals each. Paige Richbourg and Alex McNicholas also recorded a goal for the Cardinals.
Marshall, Richbourg and Ally Hall all dished an assist for Louisville.
The Wildcats finished with 36 shots to the Cardinals' 20. Louisville finished with 19 turnovers, while Northwestern committed 15.
Louisville returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET when they play at Marquette.
