Cards Power Past Bradley 7-5
February 24, 2019 | Softball
Snyder, Butler and Hensley register home runs, Hensley drives in four
Senior Megan Hensley had three hits, including a home run and collected four RBIs to help lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 7-5 win over Bradley in game two of the Tennessee Classic Sunday evening.
Â
The Cardinals (6-5) used home runs from Hensley, sophomore Kyra Snyder and freshman Charley Butler to build a 6-3 lead and Hensley added an RBI single en route to Louisville's 7-5 win.
Â
The teams played through one scoreless inning before the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead behind sophomore Kyra Snyder's two-run homer. Junior Caitlin Ferguson started the home half of the inning with a hit and took second on freshman Taylor Roby's sacrifice bunt and Snyder followed by taking a 1-2 count over the right field wall for her first career home run.
Â
Bradley (5-6) countered with a two-run homer of its own in the top of third. Gabby Stoner singled and Allison Apke's home run evened the score at 2-2.
Â
The Cards quickly answered in the bottom of the third freshman Charley Butler led off with her first career home run to put Louisville back on top 3-2.
Â
The Braves added another run in the top of the fifth when a bases-loaded walk evened the score at 3-3.
Â
Once again, Louisville used a home run to take the lead, this time, senior Megan Hensley did the honors after back-to-back hits by senior Sidney Melton and junior Celene Funke set up her three-run shot. Her second home run of the season gave the Cardinals a 6-3 lead.
Â
The Cards added an insurance run in the sixth. An error allowed pinch-hitter freshman Cassady Greenwood to reach and Butler re-entered to run and promptly took second on a wild pitch. Hensley's RBI hit plated Butler to make the score 7-3.
Â
Butler rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh. Katie Habryl singled and moved to third on Thompson's double to put runners in scoring position for an RBI groundout by Samantha Smith. Vicki Zaluske's double made it a 7-5 game with two outs, but Roby dealt a strikeout to end the game.
Â
Roby (3-1) got the win after giving up three earned runs on six hits and striking out four in 4.2 innings of relief. Hensley started the game in the circle and surrendered two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. She went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and a run to pace the Cards offensively.
Â
Julie Kestas (2-1) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and striking out two in four innings. Apke, Mead and Zaluske each had two hits.
Â
